Grayson Highlands in the Fall

Shooting black and white film in the fall may seem foolish to many. Guess what? Sometimes I prefer black and white to color during the most colorful times of the year in the Southern Appalachians. With this image shot in Grayson Highlands the time of day was not right for color photography. It was around 1:30 and the sun was washing out the bright colors. By using a number 25 red filter I was able to darken the blue sky and gain overall contrast in the image. The branches of the birch tree helped fill the sky with interesting lines and shapes.
