Stink Bug Painted With a Small Flash Light

It was late in the evening just starting to get dark when I noticed a stink bug on a bright red dogwood leave.  There was not much light to really see detail.  I thought maybe a flash light could help. I painted the bug with my  small flash light with the camera set on f-18 at 5 seconds and ISO 100. Check out the antennae the only thing that shows any movement in the long exposure. Of course I used a very sturdy tripod and hoped for no wind.

Sun Setting Behind Trees in Back Yard

I alway say you do not need to go far to find subjects worthy of photographing. Jut get off the couch and go outside with your camera.

Milky Way Foothills Parkway Tennessee

The Milky Way from Foothills Parkway  is one of the best places to star gaze in Blount County because of the absents of street lights.

Teaching Breaststroke at the University of Tennessee

Breaststroker Brad Craig is surrounded by swimmers' legs at UT. Repeated shapes of legs and lane rope with the effect of a long lens (200mm) compacting information (lane ropes in background seem to be very close together)  helps to make an interesting image.

Swim Photo Stops action

What I like about sports photography is you capture something not seen normally as you watch. In this image high shutter speed stopped the action to reveal a roaring moment.

The Sky Tonight Was Beautiful

Being outside with a camera on a night like tonight is wonderful. I watched the sky for about about 2 hours and kept shooting this light and cloud show. 80 mm lens white balance set for daylight.

View From Maryville College Bridge

I used a tripod on this one. It was a 3 second exposure which recorded the taillights and headlights of traffic on Lamar Alexander Parkway. The long exposure captured the light trails while leaving the cars  invisible. The camera's white balance was set on tungsten and the ISO was 200.

Maryville College Walking Bridge in the Moon Light

In the fall of last year I took my photography class on a field trip through Maryville. This image was made on the Maryville College Bridge over Lamar Alexander Parkway. I used a tripod with a 15 second exposure which gave me enough time to paint the bridge with a flash light. I set the camera at ISO 200 and used the tungsten setting for white balance.

More Ice in Maryville

With tripod umbrella I shot this image with the camera set on f-22 at 30 sec. at ISO 100. I used a flash light to paint light on the ice coated limbs closest to the camera.

Ice Rains Down on Maryville

I shot some ice covered trees tonight lit by the street lights of  Maryville College.I mounted my camera  to a tripod and used an umbrella to stay  dry. I set my white balance using a white sheet of paper. My camera was set on manual. Exposure information - f-9  shutter speed 10 sec. 100 ISO. The circle shaped lens flare in the upper right hand corner was caused by rain drops on the front of the lens (a happy accident).

Panorama of Happy Valley Foothills Parkway

In my younger days as a photographer I would start a day of hiking in the mountains with a frame backpack designed for overnight trips. The backpack had a 4x5 view camera, 35mm SLR, and a
2 1/4 square camera along with film and lens for each format and one very heavy tripod. I knew that each camera had its advantage for certain subjects. It was too much weight and too much to keep up with. I even thought I needed one of those panorama cameras to complete what I thought would be the perfect set of tools to capture anything I might find along the trail.
Today I carry a Digital SLR with lens and a heavy tripod. This panorama was made by putting together 7 separate images in Photoshop. The camera should be mounted on a tripod that is level. Set the camera on manual and start making exposures that overlap each other. Put them together in Photoshop and leave your panorama camera at home!

You Need Photoshop

This is an image one of my students Stephen Hillis shot on a  trip to St. Petersburg , Russia. He wanted to see what I could do to improve this image using Adobe Photoshop of The Church of Our Savior on the Spilled Blood.

Knoxville Saturday Night

Using a tripod with a long exposure I was able to capture a busy street in downtown Knoxville. The white balance was set for tungsten that gave the sky a nice  deep blue color.

Grave Site

This grave in Monticello seemed best in B&W mainly because the subject is about death not like. So bright colors seem inappropriat for this subject.
