Sun Star Through Tree

Using gobos in photography can help you deal with direct sun light. A gobo is actual a "go between", an object that blocks light. By using this tree and a small f-stop of 16, I was able to show the sun in this scene as a star shape. You can use people, cars, buildings and any other found object as a gobo. LynnFreeny.com

Portrait of Young Dancers

Faces of young children can be more expressive than adult. They also look more natural with their expressions. The reason this is true is because adults have baggage that keeps them from looking natural and relaxed. Most adults are worrying about how they are going to look. Kids are kids for the most part and portray a type of confidence that you see in models and actors.LynnFreeny.com

Basketball Goal With Reflections

I think most of photography is about looking. Anybody can learn to use camera equipment. Being able to see and capture those things that most people never notice is what being a photographer is all about. LynnFreeny.com

New River Gorge Bridge in Black and White

This is an image of New River Bridge in West Virgina. My decision to my the image black and white was because it was the middle of the day which produced very flat lighting. I was able to add more contrast as a black and white photo giving the image more snap. LynnFreeny.com

Early Morning on Cadillac Mountain

The thing I remember most about this image was the bitter cold wind that was blowing across this barren rocky mountain top. It was November at sunrise on Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park in Maine and it was clear, beautiful , and cold. Using the red channel in my RGB image helped capture the rough texture of this mountain overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. LynnFreeny.com

Storm Forming in Oak Ridge

On my way out of work I stopped at a red light and shot this through my windshield. I try to have my camera ready for those times when you just have a few seconds to react. LynnFreeny.com

Refelctions in Cades Cove

This image was shot on Saturday in the rain in Cades Cove. I have learned a long time ago if you want to get different images never listen to the weather report. Get out there in all kinds of weather and start capturing more interesting images. LynnFreeny.com

Cades Cove Spring Color

Spring has a more subdued color scheme when compared to autumn. But it has a freshness that makes it as interesting as any other season. I shot this image on Saturday in Cades Cove. This same view in the summer would be one shade of green missing all the detail reveled by the variety of colors. LynnFreeny.com

Cades Cove Clouds and Mountains

This is another image I got in Cades Cove on Saturday. Having rain as a factor helped to create some wonderful light. LynnFreeny.com

Cades Cove Spring Morning

Here is another image I shot on the photography field trip on Saturday in Cades Cove. I have to say this is one of my favorite places in the Southern Appalachians . LynnFreeny.com

Cades Cove in Spring

One of the fun parts of photography is that you can break the rules and sometimes it works. This image was shot today in Cades Cove during my photography classes last field trip for spring. In this particular photograph I actually broke the rules three different ways. One I ignored the weather report that it would rain this morning, two I shot directly into the sun, and three I was standing in the middle of the road with a car coming. LynnFreeny.com

View from Cumberland Gap

Early in the morning is a great time to catch fog in the mountains. This is a look off at Cumberland Gap. This image was shot just after sun rise. LynnFreeny.com

Downtown Knoxville Old and New

When shooting an image of a city selective views can keep the image from looking too chaotic. I used a telephoto lens to compact the information. This brought buildings closer together. I like the mix of old and new architecture revealing some of the history of Knoxville. LynnFreeny.com

White Board Reflecting Color

Sometimes even a white board can be colorful if the light is just right. In this case the warm evening light from the classroom window reflected off the white board. LynnFreeny.com

Starry Night Sky

I titled this image "Starry Night Sky" because of what it looked like not for what it really is. This is actually a high angle view of the Tennessee River with silhouetted trees. The star like dots of light are caused by sun reflecting off the water. LynnFreeny.com

Middle Prong Tremont

Here is another image I got on the class field trip to Tremont in the Great Smoky Mountains. I use a telephoto lens to help isolate one of the interesting sections of Middle Prong. LynnFreeny.com

Tree at Night

I like to take pictures at night because the world looks so different. At night the familiar sun is not there to light your subjects. In this image the light source was a street light which illuminated the tree leaving the rest of the scene with an almost spooky black background looking very much like an infrared photograph. Water Strider in Tremont

Our field trip this Saturday for my photography class was Tremont in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We were on a trail that followed along Middle Prong. This water strider was going in and out of the shadows when I captured this image. LynnFreeny.com

Early Morning Reflection

Every day I go to work I drive by this small pond along the road. This morning I had to stop and take some pictures. The colors reflecting had to be photographed. LynnFreeny.com

Spring Colors in the Mountains

Spring colors are like fall colors in reverse. The different hues of green is what makes spring so different from summer. This hill side in summer looks like the same green. But in spring it comes alive with different colors. LynnFreeny.com

Redbud Tree Blooming

You know spring is here when you see the Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) with bright purple blooms populating the wooded areas of East Tennessee. In this image I used a telephoto lens to isolate the the tree in the middle of the forest. LynnFreeny.com

Early Dogwood Blooms

Today after church the weather was perfect. Time had to be spent outside doing anything fun. I found that some of the Dogwoods in my yard had started to bloom. You will notice that the bloom has a shade of green. Dogwoods start out green then turn white as they mature. I positioned my camera angle so the sunlight would shin through the petals causing the bloom to become a light sources.LynnFreeny.com

Down town Knoville Tennessee

My class had a field trip to Knoxville which included Market Square, Old City, and down town. I am always fascinated by the mix of old and new in a city. In this image I was able to catch the reflection of an old building from new a one. LynnFreeny.com

Spring Colors in Fast Motion

In photography it is always a good idea to come out of the box by braking the rules. This image was shot out the window of a moving car. The movement of the car produced an impressionist effect. The colors look like they were painted by an artist in a hurry. At the bottom of the photograph the power lines form lines of blue. I know it is different but remember to be bold and brave and try something fresh. LynnFreeny.com

Greenbelt Park Pistol Creek

This is one of the images I shot when my photography class went out to Greenbelt Park in Maryville Tennessee Saturday morning. It was overcast the whole day so the light did not change much. The biggest challenge my students had was keeping a very gray sky out of their compositions. The sun becomes a large light source on a cloudy day thus eliminating harsh shadows. LynnFreeny.com

The Lincoln Memorial at Night

Washington DC at night is magical. I shot this image of the Lincoln Memorial using a wide angle lens. The warm hue from the light source gave a glow to the statue. LynnFreeny.com

Boy Watching Rain Storm

I am always waiting in what I like to refer to as a large elevator ( a small waiting room) while my daughters are in dance class. Tonight a quick storm moved through and as always I had my camera ready. This is the first exposure I took of this little boy watching the weather. The other images I took were not as good because he noticed me and changed his attention to my camera rather than the storm. Reflections add something special to the portrait. With a bonus of rain drops it is hard to miss getting a good image. LynnFreeny.com
